Join us on February 28th from 12-1 PM in BC 251 to explore cutting-edge research on racial disparities in two unique financial contexts: mortgage underwriting and thoroughbred horse race betting.

Key Research Topics

馃敼 Mortgage Underwriting & AI Bias 鈥 Dr. Stein will discuss findings from a study examining how large language models (LLMs) impact mortgage underwriting decisions. The research shows that LLMs systematically recommend more denials and higher interest rates for Black applicants, particularly those with lower credit scores or riskier loans. A potential mitigation strategy will also be explored.

馃敼 Racial Discrimination in Horse Betting 鈥 Betting markets aren鈥檛 immune to bias. Dr. Stein鈥檚 research uncovers how bets on horses trained by individuals with racially or ethnically distinctive nonwhite surnames earn higher risk-adjusted returns. The study highlights disparities in wagering behavior, particularly in low-stakes races and specific conditions in the U.S. South.

This event is an opportunity for students, faculty, and professionals interested in finance, economics, and social justice to engage in an insightful discussion on how racial disparities manifest in financial decision-making.
