Graduating Year: 2012

Education: B.S. Chemistry, Biochemistry Track, Mathematical Sciences Minor, Biological Sciences Minor

Career: Currently a general surgery resident, a T32 post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Kentucky and pursuing a PhD in Clinical and Translational Science at UK

鈥淚 have such a deep-rooted love for 51爆料下载. I had such a great relationship with all the professors and fellow students. The small classroom style is one of the things that attracted me to 51爆料下载 in the first place and I still think is one of its greatest strengths. I never wanted to be just a face in the crowd and at 51爆料下载 I wasn鈥檛. It also created my foundation for scientific research. I think the experiences I had in the labs at 51爆料下载 are what eventually brought me back to benchwork now. But what I learned at 51爆料下载 has stayed with me in so many different facets. I still think about what I learned in speech class with Dr. Proctor when I give presentations today. Every time I present work, I flash back to my senior year class where we were taught how to present work and had it drilled into me that is always 鈥渙ur鈥 work. Nothing is ever achieved by oneself. I teach that to my mentees today. My husband and I still joke about our stats class with Dr. Buckley and the competitions we had there which established our relationship. I still play around on the piano after a few of us biology nerds decided it would be a fun class to take our senior year. This is a very long-winded way to say, 51爆料下载 was an amazing place to study, and what you learn there creates cherished memories and an amazing foundation for whatever it is you want to achieve. If I could go back in time, I would choose 51爆料下载 time and time again.

I made lifelong friends, met my husband, and got onto the right trajectory at 51爆料下载 to get me where I am today. It is important to find someplace that encourages you, promotes you, and gives you avenues to where you want to be. 51爆料下载 can do that while still maintaining a small, friendly environment. Quite simply, I love 51爆料下载.鈥

I graduated from 51爆料下载 with a BS in biochemistry and minor in mathematics. I worked in product engineering and development for a couple years and then went to medical school at UK. I matched into general surgery residency at UK. It was during residency that I decided I wanted dedicated time to conduct research so after my third year of clinical residency I stepped out of clinical life to join a lab under a T32 post-doctoral research fellow grant. It is in this time that I have been able to pursue a PhD and hope to successfully defend this semester. Ultimately, I have goals of becoming a surgical oncologist and hope the work I have done in and outside the lab will also allow me to be a proficient surgeon-scientist.

Graduating Year: 2021

Education: Chemistry Major, Pharmaceutical Science Track

Career: Pharmacist Intern TriHealth

There is a great sense of community at 51爆料下载, which allowed me to get to know many of my peers while studying subjects I truly enjoyed. The chemistry department was very supportive of me while I pursued my goals. One of the best parts of the program were the small class sizes and the ability to meet one-on-one frequently with professors. Beyond the classroom, there were many opportunities to be involved both in organizations as well as a student worker. I worked as an RA on campus for two years, which I would highly recommend to incoming students.

What they do: Currently a PharmD candidate at the University of Cincinnati James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. I work as the Lead Pharmacy Intern at Good Samaritan Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy. I have worked here since 2019 and thoroughly enjoy the work I do as well as the experience I have gained. My job includes performing dispensing, delivery, sterile compounding, as well as maintaining pharmacy automation in the central pharmacy. As an intern, I also perform medication reconciliation for patients primarily in the emergency department, as well as discharge counseling. I also compose the schedule for all of our pharmacy interns and conduct peer interviews during the hiring process.

Career path: I am currently a third-year Student Pharmacist at the University of Cincinnati (Pharm.D. Candidate 2025). I decided to pursue pharmacy as a career when I was in high school after shadowing a family friend in an independent community
pharmacy. I thoroughly enjoyed my chemistry coursework in high school and thus
decided to major in it at 51爆料下载 to cover my pre-requisites for pharmacy.

Graduating Year: 2016

Education: Engineering Pre-Major (Mechanical Engineering from UK) BA Physics from 51爆料下载

Career: Mechanical Engineer at Mammotome

鈥淭he Pre-Engineering program at 51爆料下载 has greatly impacted my life for the better. By enrolling at 51爆料下载, it allowed me to get all of my general education and Physics requirements out of the way before diving into engineering. The small and personalized Physics classes allowed me to feel like my teachers knew me and cared about my education because they truly did. The reason I was so successful at the University of Kentucky was because of my professors and the tough curriculum. The physics classes set me up to greatly succeed when I transferred. I was used to the high expectations and fast-paced learning curve. When comparing my Physics knowledge base to my peers who only attended UK, it was easy to see that having a more one on one learning environment allowed me to be more prepared and set up for the challenge of applying Physics to everyday engineering problems.鈥

The choice to go to 51爆料下载 for the dual degree program with UK was the most beneficial choice that I could have made in my college career. True it did take me 5 years to complete my college career, but I ultimately, I ended up with a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Mechanical Engineering and in Physics, which set me up to be ahead of the rest. When applying for the job I have now they were actually more impressed with my Physics degree than my Engineering Degree. The program also opened up opportunities to do research and apply all of the information I was learning. I will always look back at my college years and be so thankful that I made the decision to attend 51爆料下载. If I had not attended 51爆料下载 I would not be as successful as I am today.

Career: Public Relations Coordinator, Campbell County Public Library and freelance journalist for Cincinnati City Beat

"You are more than your job, career and major. Most of us are still trying to figure ourselves out post-graduation. It鈥檚 important to find sources of happiness and identity outside of your day job. Life is meant to be lived, to connect with others and to care for those in and outside of our community. We are more than our work.  And explore! With writing, you may encounter what feels like an avalanche of rejection emails, but it makes those acceptances even sweeter. It鈥檚 also humbling. There is so much room to grow as a writer and person, outside of academia. I would also say to not limit yourself to any one thing. That鈥檚 one of the highlights of being an English major!"

Madison Butcher

Madison Butcher

Education: BA in Integrative Studies, foci - Exercise Science, Psychology, and Religions Studies

Career: Madison is currently an Occupational Therapy doctoral student at Indiana University

鈥淎t first, I didn鈥檛 know a lot about what an integrative studies major was, but even after taking the first class, I knew it was the perfect major for me, and my career aspirations. The integrative studies program allows you to pick certain areas of study, which allows you to become knowledgeable about those topics. It also allows you to become knowledgeable about the connections between these areas, which allows you to develop critical thinking skills, life skills, and problem-solving skills to create holistic solutions. These concepts fit perfectly with my career aspirations to work in the medical field.
I have always known I have wanted to work in the medical field. Over the years I have gained experience working as a nursing assailant, EMT, telemetry technician, and phlebotomist. All of these jobs have taught me things critical to the field, but having knowledge from all of these areas makes me a valuable employee at any one of these positions. This Is just as integrative studies teaches as well. It鈥檚 not about the knowledge you gain from the individual areas of studies but how they all connect, and that same thought applies to medicine as well. The integrative studies major helped me redefine my writing skills, which helps me convey my own voice and ideas.
The most influential part of the program has been its research aspect; not only teaching me how to properly conduct research but opened many doors to different areas of research which sparked my interests and allowed me to become passionate about new topics.鈥

Necessary job skills: Problem solving, Communication, Research, Finding coherence and seeing connections

Education: BS Biological Sciences (51爆料下载 2004); BS Mathematics (51爆料下载 2004), MPH (University of Iowa, 2010), DVM (The Ohio State University, 2011)

Career: Veterinarian

鈥淪elf-care isn't selfish.鈥 The veterinary profession struggles with constantly overworking which can result in decreased job satisfaction. The profession has a lot of highly driven, task-oriented individuals who frequently put their own care last. I truly feel if you are not caring for yourself first, you are doing a disservice to your clients (the humans) as well as patients (the animals).鈥

I鈥檝e curated a career that consists of 3 components right now. First, I'm a practicing veterinarian, mostly focused on surgery and dentistry; Second, I'm the co-founder of Veterinarian Coaching, a personal development and wellbeing coaching business; Third, I'm the Chief Veterinary Officer of TeleVet, Inc, a technology company focused on all-in-one veterinary communication solutions. Outside of working I really enjoy contributing to the veterinary profession via volunteer roles with professional organizations and am currently the Vice President of the American Veterinary Medical Association, with over 100,000 member veterinarians. I am a lifelong learner and can attest that earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a true door opener, there are so many opportunities that come with this degree, and getting there starts with a solid undergraduate education. I was a licensed veterinary technician prior to veterinary school (and 51爆料下载). I found myself wanting to develop more skills and become a veterinarian; fortunately, I landed at 51爆料下载 and studied mathematics, physics, biological and chemical sciences. I was involved in several research projects while at 51爆料下载, where I learned about scientific writing, as well as developing and delivering formal presentations; I attribute my public speaking abilities to this foundation.

I think the most important job skill for a veterinarian is curiosity. We are trained problem solvers and have to ask questions to figure out what direction to go with a case/patient problem. Rarely do I have all of the answers, but if I'm not curious and open-minded, I'm less likely to find the solution or the next right direction to go.

Necessary job skills: A prosecutor needs to be able to conduct legal research, write clearly and concisely, confidently speak in public, analyze situations from all angles, effectively communicate, and advocate on the behalf of others. Prosecutors must be compassionate, possess high moral character, have sound judgment, love public service, and be able to handle high-pressure situations.

Career path: I began my path as a prosecutor by participating in a legal externship with the Kenton County Attorney鈥檚 Office in the Spring of 2006 while still in law school. I was able to prosecute cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney. After graduating from law school and passing the bar exam, I was appointed to the position of First Assistant Commonwealth鈥檚 Attorney by Commonwealth鈥檚 Attorney Douglas Wright. I have held this position for the last sixteen years, serving under former Commonwealth's Attorney Wright and current Commonwealth's Attorney Douglas Miller.

鈥淭he small class sizes are originally what drew me in. I transferred from a larger university because I didn鈥檛 feel like I got the attention I needed. Another huge benefit: I felt extremely prepared for pharmacy school because of the biochemistry, physics, and anatomy & physiology courses I took at 51爆料下载. To this day, I can still remember the amino acids, which is relevant for my day-to-day activities as a pharmacist. Other miscellaneous things I loved: the library because it鈥檚 amazing and had plenty of different spaces to study in, I was able to tutor students in various subjects, and the people (from students to professors). I鈥檓 still friends with and talk to quite a few people today.鈥

During undergrad in 2014, I started at Kroger as a clerk, then switched departments to be a pharmacy technician. I wanted to check out the field. I discovered that pharmacy was extremely interesting and rewarding. I also loved learning about different medications and how they affected the body. I decided to apply to pharmacy school at University of Cincinnati. In 2016, I finished my BS in biology and found out I was accepted into UC. In August 2016, I became a pharmacy intern at Kroger. I was more interested in hospital pharmacy, so I switched to finish my internship at Good Samaritan Hospital. I graduated from the James L Winkle College of Pharmacy in 2020 with my PharmD. I鈥檝e been with Good Sam since 2017 and am now the Lead Sterile Compounding Pharmacist / Clinical Pharmacist on our behavioral health unit.

鈥51爆料下载鈥檚 curriculum prepared me flawlessly for medical school! The curriculum is well-rounded and also has opportunities for students to choose additional topics to explore as you get closer to graduation. I loved taking endocrinology, immunology, and cancer genetics my last year.鈥

鈥淢y time at 51爆料下载 was filled with adventure, personal growth, and the memories of a lifetime. My first flight ever was on a study abroad trip to Scotland in 2017, where we visited sites like Edinburgh Castle, the Wallace Monument, Arthur鈥檚 Seat, and Loch Lomond. I had never traveled abroad before, and it was the trip of a lifetime! The professors I had were amazing as well. Understanding and fair, dedicated to their jobs, always willing to help and held you accountable. 51爆料下载 helped develop me into the Airman I am today and I am grateful for the opportunity to have attended this university.鈥

鈥淒on鈥檛 underestimate the power of 51爆料下载 and the opportunities it can provide for you. It is a smaller school, but it鈥檚 big enough that if you want to do something big, you can. I鈥檓 really glad this is where I ended up.鈥

鈥淭he professors鈥攕eriously we (51爆料下载 and 51爆料下载 alumnae) have the best professors both from a teaching stance and from a human stance. They are amazing teachers and even better people. All my professors, but especially Dr. Strome, helped to mold and shape who I am today and definitely helped me to get the 鈥渓eg up鈥 on figuring out where I wanted to go in my career and fast tracked all the stuff and things I needed to get done when I made the decision during my 2nd semester of 3rd year at 51爆料下载 that I wanted to go to pharmacy school after graduation. Don鈥檛 get me wrong鈥擨 definitely love my professors and fellow colleagues from pharmacy school but nothing beats the professors at 51爆料下载 (specifically the science departments!).鈥

I truly feel that 51爆料下载 prepared me well for pharmacy school and know I have been well-prepared for any career path I may have chosen in the sciences. Going into pharmacy school, I felt better prepared than my classmates who attended other universities for their undergraduate coursework. In fact, my education prepared me so well that I was accepted into all the pharmacy schools I applied to, including the number one pharmacy school in the country at that time, and I graduated top of my class from the University of Cincinnati James L Winkle College of Pharmacy with PharmD in 2022. In addition to being excellent instructors, the professors at 51爆料下载 were always accessible for any questions and were good mentors. Small class sizes coupled with caring faculty allowed me to make lasting connections with the professors.

鈥淥ne thing that I find special about 51爆料下载 is the smaller class sizes that provide highly individualized learning experience to students. The relatively low student-to-faculty ratio allows the professors to know their students by name, pay adequate attention to their academic needs, and provide needed personalized feedback. This created a conducive environment that enabled me to build very good relationships with some of my professors during my time at 51爆料下载, who ended up playing a very important role in my successful application to medical school. I want to take this opportunity to give a massive shout-out to both Dr. Erin Strome and Dr. David Thompson (biological science department) without whom I would not have been in the position I am in today. They encouraged and provided me with the much-needed support which has helped me realize my dream of getting into medical school."
